Tsunamis: Destructive Ocean Waves Caused by Underwater Earthquakes   A tsunami is a series of powerful ocean waves capable of sending walls of water crashing onto land, with heights sometimes exceeding 100 feet (30.5 meters). These waves can cause severe damage when they reach shore. What Triggers a Tsunami? The primary cause of tsunamis is large undersea earthquakes occurring along tectonic plate boundaries. When the ocean floor shifts abruptly at these boundaries—either rising or falling—it displaces the water above, generating waves that will form into a tsunami. Around 80 percent of tsunamis occur in the Pacific Ocean's "Ring of Fire," an area known for its active geology, where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common. Tsunamis can also result from underwater landslides or volcanic eruptions. In Earth's ancient past, they were even triggered by the impact of massive meteorites crashing into oceans.
